FAQs about Geekz Business Hosting

What do I need to know about computers?

Even a complete beginner can get their business online with Geekz. We have a comprehensive knowledgebase, video tutorials (coming soon) and help is available 7 days a week from Australian people who understand what it's like to run a business in Australia. We've been where you are now, and will do our best to use minimum jargon (unless you want to talk techie and we can do that too).

What if I want to cancel my account?

We have no contracts - we just require 14 days notice to prevent you from having to pay another month's bill. You can back up your website and all its data from the control panel provided if you wish to take your site to another provider. In order to restore the backup somewhere else your new provider will need to use/support cPanel 11.

How do I know how many visitors my website has received?

Comprehensive web statisitics are provided in your control panel. If you need help finding them, please refer to our knowledgebase or put in a support ticket for assistance.

Are your servers Linux or Windows? Does that mean my computer has to use the same operating system?

To access your website, all you'll need is an FTP program or a web browser. It doesn't matter what type of computer you are using, whether it is Windows a Max or Linux. The server runs a Linux server operating system called CentOS 5.5 and a web server software called Apache 2.2 which is optimised to serving web pages as efficiently as possible.

If you require Windows hosting, you will need to contact us for a quote depending on your needs.

Where are your servers located?

For performance, security and reliability reasons, we have made a business decision to host our servers in a world-class hosting datacentre in the United States of America. After an extensive review of wholesale providers, we found that servers there are of much higher performance and value-for-money than we could have obtained in Australia, and we can pass this on to you in terms of fantastic value-for-money as well. All of our staff are located in Australia. We do not use offshore contractors.

Our servers are monitored 24/7 and actively managed by our data centre for security and performance. For fellow Geekz, the minimum server specs include Dual Xeon E5520 2.26Ghz Quad Core Processors and installed with Apache 2.2.x in a SuExec environment. Mod_rewrite and mod_security are both set up along with cPanel 11, CentOS 5.5, My SQL 5, PHP 5.2 and Parallels Sitebuilder. Xeon processors are designed by Intel specificially for server use and are extremely high performance.

Do you allow adult sites?

Unfortunately we do not accept adult sites on our servers.

What's the difference between your service and hosting accounts provided by an ISP?

In general, your ISP (e.g. Bigpond, iiNet, TPGI, Netspace, Dodo) provides you with your connection to the Internet, but does not provide you with the space to physically put your website on to. Some ISPs do also provide business hosting services, which are competition services to ours.  It's up to you to decide for yourself whether you would rather have your website stored at Geekz or on your ISP's server. We recommend you compare the monthly space and traffic allowances provided to you by your ISP versus ours when deciding where you want your business website.
