Keyword Density is a measure of clutter and it is a measure used by search engines to help determine if you are over-using a certain term in order to make the page seem more relevant to search engines. In it’s most basic form, it is calculated by taking the word or phrase that you are interested in, and calculating the times that word or phrase appears relative to the total number of words on the page/piece of text/article.

Here’s a quick keyword density calculator that you can bookmark and use as you need it. Just put in the keyword you are interested in and copy or paste the text that you are checking. The keyword density of that phrase relative to the total words in that article is calculated.

For the purposes of calculation, the total number of physical words is computed. So the phrase Geekz Business Web Hosting with the target phrase business web hosting would be calculated at 25%. That is, the phrase is 25% of the total number of words in the paragraph.

What is an ideal keyword density?

What the best keyword density is for a given search term varies, as it depends on the keyword itself, how competitive that keyword is, and what others in the industry are doing, but it is a generally accepted rule of thumb that if you are writing a piece for inclusion on your website you should aim for a density of approximately 3%. That is, enough to give it more importance than random text, but certainly not overloaded. There will be exceptions where you will want a greater or lesser density but this is a good starting point for your writing.
